molenbeek
Identity & website
Being named European Capital of Culture is about more than a year of events. It is an opportunity for a city to express a vision, reshape perception, and show how culture can become a force for transformation. For Molenbeek, this candidacy carried particular weight. Too often burdened by clichés and outside projections, Molenbeek saw a way to reclaim the narrative and put forward a different reality: one defined by solidarity, diversity, resilience, and the people who live and shape it every day. Designing the visual identity of Molenbeek for Brussels 2030 meant giving shape to far more than a cultural bid. It meant translating a collective ambition into a living, recognisable, and shareable visual language. Molenbeek for Brussels 2030 is built on the idea that culture can become common ground for solidarity, creativity, and belonging. It is a collective story shaped by young voices, artists, neighbours, families, communities, and local forces coming together around a shared future. Inspired by the principle of Sadaka, generosity without expecting anything in return, the identity was conceived as an open system: bold, flexible, and people-driven, for Molenbeek, Brussels, and Europe. We reimagined the mill, Molenbeek’s emblematic symbol, as a contemporary mark whose four blades stand for solidarity, generosity, empathy, and altruism. It is paired with vibrant colours and a variable typeface chosen to reflect the diversity, energy, and plurality of the people behind the movement. As part of the identity, we also created a simple hand sign: a shared gesture that turns the visual system into a movement people can embody, spread, and make their own. This identity was designed as a collective symbol for a project carried by the people of Molenbeek, with Europe in sight.
